Northerners were much more dependent on each other for necessities like food and clothing than the Southerners. The North did not have the money, climate, or natural conditions for farming like the South. Thus, they needed marketplaces and tightly knit communities to keep their economy in place.
They had small farms, and little need for slaves. This may have spurred the idea that slavery was not only not necessary, but that it was an aberration of humanity, and thus started abolition.
The average (white male) Northerner did not have the same amount of money as the average (white male) Southerner did. Thus, there was not as much frivolous dressing and accessories in the North as there was in the South. This amount - or lack thereof - of money caused the need for marketplaces and merchants.
With this economy, merchants became the richest men in the North.
Soon, the North began to industrialize. This meant building factories and railroads, and developing more technology. The North began evolving in a way that the South could not. Since the North's economy did not focus solely on farming, they could use imports and exports to build bigger and better factories, to make bigger and better products.
The fact that the industrialization required man labor, but not slaves, further helped the North's arguments against slavery. The North was more open minded towards more rights for black people and women, but that is not to say they were as open minded as people are today. They were still somewhat prejudiced and uninformed, and often made fun of black people for entertainment, but still did not see owning a slave as a moral act.
